Pants & Shorts: Get the Measurements Right First
Pants and shorts are moderate to ship and unforgiving to fit, so the effort here goes into measurements rather than packaging. They fold flat and pack densely, which keeps freight reasonable, but a pair that is an inch off in the waist or wrong in the inseam is unwearable no matter how well it arrives.
Never order bottoms on the size label alone. Rep and factory sizing for pants is inconsistent across cuts and brands, and vanity sizing makes the number meaningless. Always request the flat measurements and double where needed:
- Waist: measure a pair that fits you, lay them flat, and match the number. This is the measurement that ruins most orders.
- Inseam and length: critical for tapered, cropped, and wide-leg cuts. A great waist with the wrong length still looks off.
- Thigh and leg opening: tells you whether a "regular" fit is actually slim or baggy in person.
Fabric changes both fit and shipping weight. Denim and heavy cargos are dense and pack heavy, while nylon track pants and thin shorts are light and compressible. Denim in particular can shrink on the first wash and stretch back through wear, so size with that cycle in mind.
During QC, inspect the hardware and construction that carry stress: zipper and button quality, belt loops that are securely attached, straight seams down the leg, and even hems. On cargos and technical pants, check that pockets, snaps, and drawcords all function. On jeans, look at wash consistency, distressing placement, and rivet finishing, since these are the details that separate a convincing pair from an obvious one.
Shorts are the lighter, easier cousin. They ship cheaply and are good gap-fillers in a consolidated box, but the waist-measurement rule still applies fully.
